The silence between us stretched as we retraced our steps away from Laguna de Los Tres. Hana's usual chatter had been replaced by quiet introspection. I could feel the burden of her thoughts, the way they seemed to press into the space around us. Attempting to lighten the mood, I shared stories from my past hikes, but even the most amusing anecdotes barely drew a momentary smile from her.

"Careful here," I cautioned as we approached a small creek that cut across our path. The water sang as it rushed over smooth stones, inviting us to cross. I reached out my hand to her, and she hesitantly took it in hers with a weak grip. As we hopped across, her foot slipped on a wet rock, her balance faltering. Instinctively, I reached out with my other hand, steadying her against my chest.

"Thank you," she murmured, her eyes briefly meeting mine before looking away. Something was still amiss, but I decided not to press further.

We continued walking until we found a shaded enclave by the creek, where the sunlight filtered through the leaves in dappled patterns. Here, we settled on a large boulder, its surface worn smooth by time. We shared trail mix, the nuts and dried fruits a simple yet satisfying reprieve, and washed it down with water that tasted like the mountains themselves.

"Let's rest our eyes for a bit," I suggested, noticing the fatigue that shadowed her features. She leaned against me without a word, her body radiating warmth. In the stillness of the forest, I pondered tomorrow's journey.

"Are you up for more hiking?" I asked, breaking the comfortable silence. "We're heading to Cerro Torre's base camp tomorrow."

She nodded, her head still resting against my shoulder. "No problem. I've done multi-trek hikes before. Last June, I completed the West Coast Trail in Canada – ten days, and I didn't need rescuing once."

"Wow, that's impressive," I replied, genuinely taken aback. The West Coast Trail was notorious for its difficulty. "What was it like?"

"Unforgettable and … inspirational," she said, a wistful tone threading through her words. "Climbing ladders, wading through deep waters, navigating slippery grounds. There were moments when I doubted my ability to finish."

"Is it just the photos that motivate you to hike such challenging trails?" I probed, curious about what drove her.

"No, not just the photos," Hana responded, her voice soft but resolute. "I love the challenge, too. The scenery is a bonus."

We let the conversation lapse into natural pause, the sound of the creek's flowing water and the harmonious chirping of birds surrounding us.

As the gentle rhythm of nature hummed around us, Hana's breathing slowed, her body relaxing fully against mine. She drifted off to sleep, her head nestled comfortably on my shoulder. Allowing myself the luxury of rest, I closed my eyes, the memories of past hikes with Joanne flickering behind my eyelids. I dozed off in the serene embrace of the wilderness, with Hana sleeping peacefully beside me.
